Captivated: The Art of Ikki Matsumoto

is the first published compilation of the artist's work, chronicling his life and art after he moved to Sanibel Island, Florida, and found his unique artistic voice. The book is a coffee-table volume published by the Sandpiper Press in 2020, and it has won several awards.

Key Details

  • Content: The 156-page book features over 119 full-color images of Matsumoto's work, including his well-known acrylic paintings of local wildlife like sandpipers and anhingas, vibrant silkscreens, and posters for local non-profits. It also includes candid family photos and mementos from his nearly 40 years on Sanibel and Captiva islands, offering a behind-the-scenes look at his life and creative process.
  • Artistic Style: Matsumoto's art is known for its whimsical nature, simple shapes, graphic quality, and clean lines, often described as combining traditional Japanese influences with modern themes. He worked in various mediums, including watercolor, gouache, and acrylics, and was also a trained printmaker.
  • Inspiration: The abundant wildlife and natural beauty of Southwest Florida served as his primary muse, with his work aiming to "simply wish to delight" viewers.
  • Publication: The book was initiated and written by Sanibel resident Steve Saari, who, with Matsumoto's wife Polly and daughter Amy, gathered images of his prolific but often undigitized work from collectors through a social media outreach effort.
  • Recognition: Captivated won the Richard E. Rice Gold Medal Prize for Visual Arts from the Florida Book Awards in 2021 and a bronze medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards' Coffee Table Book category.
  • Availability: The first edition was a limited release and quickly sold out.

    Amazing artwork, high quality book.

I was thrilled when I received my copy of Captivated. It's a stunning print, and the illustration of the anhinga is going to be the inspiration for my next Florida bird tattoo. Ikki captured as much spirit as appearance in these gorgeous birds and I can't get enough. It's now graced my coffee table in the last three states I've lived in and I don't suspect it'll ever be absent. Thank you for such a wonderful book. I'll definitely buy a reprint!

    Hi Lauren,

Let me know which image and I'll make you an outline drawing of it for your tattoo. I have six myself, which my father never knew about (that I know of). I remember my brother, Bin, calling home from the Army and asked my dad about a tattoo and my dad reply's, "if you get one, don't come home." I was 10 and that declaration scared me for 9 more years, until I was faced with the opportunity... I learned from my brother's mistake, so I didn't call and ask for their advice. I always followed the philosophy of "Better to Ask for Forgiveness, Then to Ask for Permission." Especially, at the age of 19 and I was living on the other side of the country. Let me know;)
